Cats Fall 3-0 to Spartans in W. Soccer, First Loss in Past Eight Games

Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID
DAVIDSON, N.C. –– UNC Greensboro scored two early first period goals and held off a strong second-half charge by Davidson in picking a 3-0 win as the Wildcats saw their eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end at Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference women's soccer action.
Davidson suffered its first home loss of the season in falling to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. UNCG ran its winning streak to five games with the win to improve to 8-3-1 overall and 5-0-0 in SoCon action.
Both goalies were tested early as each team took a shot in taking an early lead in a battle of two teams undefeated in league play. Sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) got off three shots, two of them directly on goal in the first ten minutes that UNCG's Katherine Ryan had to make two jumping stabs at to halt the Wildcat attack.
Senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) made two diving stops, one on a shot from the near side and another on a shot that was struck from about 20 yards out by Lauren Lopez. English finished the contest with four saves as she saw her record drop to 7-4-1.
UNC Greensboro broke through in the 16th minute thanks to Kristin Player. Jennifer Bronson started the scoring rally when she fed a look pass to Player, who broke past the Wildcat defense in the middle of the field. She then battled with senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.), who rode Player's left hip until the 18-yard box where Player shot one past a diving English on the near side of the goal. It was Player's eight score of the season.
The Spartans struck again at the 28:02 mark on a give-and-go by Heather Mitrisin and Jenn Parternheimer. Mitrisin drove the ball down the far side and worked it into the middle where she fed Parternheimer, who was streaking down the near side of the field. Parternheimer gathered in the one touch pass and drove past her defender, placing a near post side shot past English, who was charging to the right-corner of the 18-yard box.
Davidson did its best in trying to come back from the two-goal deficit after halftime with eight second-half shots, including three from Bye-Nagel, who nearly missed a near post shot in the 59th minute. She also picked up another direct shot on goal in the 76th minute, but was never able to get one of her eight shots on the day to find the back of the net.
Katie Jordan closed out the scoring for the Spartans with a shot to near post in the 18-yard box at the 77:13 mark for the final score of 3-0. Jenn Partenheimer and Kelly Attayek were credited with assists on the play.
The Spartan's Katherine Ryan registered six saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
Davidson did have a 13-10 advantage in shots, placing six of them on goal, while earning three corner kicks.
The Wildcats look to get back on the winning track when they play host to College of Charleston on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. The Cougars are currently 4-0-1 in league play.
