DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) registered her second two-goal game of her career and netted the game-winner in the 95th minute on a header to carry the Davidson women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime thrilling win over College of Charleston on Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium in Southern Conference action. The game-winner was Sittko's fifth of her career after netting four during last year's Co-SoCon Freshman of the Year campaign.
The Wildcats rebounded with a nice win after falling to UNC Greensboro on Sunday to improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. They also ran their home mark to 5-1 and tallied their fourth overtime win of the year. The Cougars saw their six-game unbeaten streak come to an end as they fell to 8-6-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the SoCon.
The sophomore sent the Wildcat faithful crowd home five minutes into overtime when fellow sophomore Katherine Laco (Potomac, Md.) sent a cross from the left side into the six-yard box where a streaking near-post run by Sittko proved to be the difference maker. The sophomore forward needed only a graze off the top of her head to beat the Cougars' keeper and garner her first game-winner of the season. The two goals on the evening gave Sittko three for the year.
Sittko put the Wildcats on the board first in the 19:58 mark of the first half. After Davidson worked the ball to the middle of the field when senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) sent a pass into Sittko in the 18-yard box, where the sophomore turned and struck a shot into the top corner for a 1-0 Wildcats lead.
College of Charleston hit the equalizer in the 28th minute off a free kick on the near side of the field by Davidson's 18-yard box. Danielle Jordan sent a pass into the penalty box to Chrissy Caruso, who headed in the Cougar goal to knot things up at 1-1.
Davidson nearly took home the win in regulation. Three times the 'Cats hit the woodwork during the second half with sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) hitting the crossbar twice in the half. Davidson picked up 12 shots alone in the half.
Goalie Sarah Wiggers of the Cougars was busy all night with Davidson peppering the goal 12 times and Wiggers recording 10 saves. Davidson got off 24 shots in all to pick up a 17-shot advantage for the game. The Wildcats also held a 5-2 advantage in corner shots.
Senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) made a couple of nice diving stops on her way to three saves for the Wildcats.
Davidson hits the road for its next contest when it travels to Cullowhee, N.C. on Sunday, Oct. 21, for a 4 p.m. game.
