DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and freshman Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) went a combined 6-0 in singles play on Friday and Saturday and the Davidson men's tennis team concluded its portion of the fall schedule with the Jim Causey/Davidson Invitational held on the campus of Davidson College, Oct. 12-13. Along with Davidson, Southern Conference opponents Furman and Appalachian State, and cross-county rival Charlotte, also attended the round-robin team-tournament.
"The guys did a great job this weekend," stated head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his second year at the helm of the men's tennis program. Saturday was a nice way to end the season for most of the players with us playing very well against two quality opponents in Charlotte and Furman. I look forward to carrying this momentum into the spring season and I know the guys are happy with their results."
Myers and Lyons, who both represented Davidson at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Oct. 5-7, started off the invitational with straight wins over two players from Appalachian State. Myers cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the number six singles flight, while Lyons had a little tougher time, but still prevailed, 6-4, 7-6, over Dave Doverspike.
The duo then took on two players from Charlotte with Myers earning another solid straight set win, 6-2, 6-2, over Jeff Archer. Lyons, who played at the number five flight singles, stormed back after dropping the first set, 2-6, to secure a 6-0, (10-4) win over Alex Glass of the 49ers.
Each then concluded the invitational with 7-6, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-3 wins at their respective singles spots over two individuals from Furman.
The Wildcats' number one player, senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) was second on the team with a 2-1 record over the two-day invitational. After dropping Friday's match to Ryan Brookshaw in straight sets, Simihaian came back to nail down wins over Felix Bernhoerster of Charlotte (6-4, 7-5) and Daniel Knause of Furman (6-1, 4-6, 11-9) on Saturday to finish at 2-1.
Five other individual Wildcats picked up singles wins, including freshman Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore David Warren (Hilton Head, S.C.), who scored their first wins of the fall. As a team, Davidson went a combined 13-10 in singles flight play.
Davidson also was well represented in the doubles flights, led by Simihaian and junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) who partnered up to go 2-0. The duo picked up an 8-2 decision over Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs of Appalachian State, before wrapping up the weekend with an 8-5 win over Andy Sobczyk and Eric Olson of Furman.
Simihaian also teamed up with fellow senior Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) to earn an 8-5 win over the number one team from Charlotte. Compeau, who also won his lone singles match of the weekend, split two matches with doubles partner sophomore Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) as they defeated the number one doubles team of ASU, 8-4, before dropping an 8-6 decision to Furman's number one team.
Wrapping up the strong doubles play was Myers, who went 2-0 with two different partners in wins over Charlotte and Furman.
Davidson puts a final stamp on the fall season when it will send a select few to represent the Wildcats at next weekend's ITA Regionals, which will be held in Lexington, Ky.
