Davidson Ends Skid With 3-2 Triumph over Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Davidson rallied from two-goals down to end a seven-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory at Georgia Southern in SoCon men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field. Putting a halt to their longest skid in 11 years, the Wildcats improve to 2-10-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the league, while GSU falls to 5-8-0 and 1-3-0.
“Not only was it nice to see our guys win a match,” commented Davidson assistant coach Clint Peay. “But to get a victory in a game they were in a hole, will really help our confidence,”
After playing to scoreless draw in the opening period, Georgia Southern grabbed a quick 2-0 advantage with scores from Kim Kroken and Daniel Smith in the 56th and 59th minutes, respectively.
The game's first goal came off a penalty kick as a result of a Wildcat foul in the box. Just 3:20 after Kroken put his club up 1-0, Smith extended the Eagles' advantage with a blast from just inside the 18-yard box.
Like Georgia Southern's first strike, Davidson got on the board when Robby Hoak capitalized on the 'Cats only PK attempt through 12 contests.
Shortly after Hoak's team-leading fourth goal of the slate, sophomore Charlie Reiter tied the affair with a bomb from 25 yards out that dipped over the head of GSU keeper Brian Young. Reiter's 82nd minute equalizer was his second score in as many contest.
With the game deadlocked 2-2 and only 5:46 remaining in regulation, Robert O'Donnell couldn't have picked a better time for his first collegiate score. A native of Chevy Chase, Md., O'Donnell's difference maker and just his third career shot attempt came off a header from 10 yards out.
“It was a game where our guys off the bench stepped up and made a difference. They brought a never break attitude that helped us get a crucial win. Those guys off the bench really helped energize us,” said Peay.
In a game that feature 43 fouls, the Wildcats finished with nine shots on frame to hold a 13-10 edge. Young turned away a game-high six attempts between the pipes for GSU, while Davidson's Robby Goldsberry stopped three of his own.
Davidson returns home for the first of five straight at Alumni Stadium when it host Appalachian State Wednesday at 7 p.m. Georgia Southern will also entertain the Mountaineers in its next contest a week from today at 12 p.m.
