SPARTANBURG, S.C. –– Senior tri-captain Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.), junior Chloe King (Wellesley, Mass.) and the rest of their defensive teammates helped the women's soccer team remain unbeaten in league play as the Davidson Wildcats and the Wofford Terriers played to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of soccer on Friday night at Snyder Field. Davidson saw its Southern Conference record go to 3-0-1 and its overall mark to 8-3-1. Wofford had its second tie of the season to move to 5-6-2 overall and 1-2-1.
Senior tri-captain Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) along with her defensive teammates earned their third straight shutout, and sixth overall, during the 2007 campaign. The 'Cats defense came into the contest allowing under a goal a game. Since giving up eight goals in the first four games, English and the Wildcat defense has allowed just three single goals during the eight-game unbeaten streak.
Both teams played a scoreless first half, but each had their chances to break up the 0-0 tie. Of Davidson's five first-half corner kicks, two of them had a chance to find the back of the net. In the 15th minute, senior Kristen Koehrn's (La Mesa, Calif.) header on the far side was saved by a Wofford defender and then found the hands of goalie Katie McChesney. Then in the 31st minute, sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) took a shot on goal with a header off a corner, but Wofford's McChesney again registered the save.
Sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) nearly broke up the shutout with a line drive shot to the top half of the goal from 20-yards out, but McChesney made a jumping stab at the ball to push it up and over the crossbar to preserve the shutout.
Wofford's lone shot of the half was very similar to Low's as Mary Rea gathered in a pass at the top of the 18-yard box and drove a ball just over the crossbar.
The second half again saw each team have a number of chances to score the first goal of the contest. Three minutes into the start of the second period, sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) raced down the near side of the field into the 18-yard box near the endline and sent a cross into the penalty box, but a sliding Low just missed kicking the ball into the wide open goal.
Wofford got off four of its six second-half shots in the first ten minutes of the half, including a direct shot that English made a diving grab at in the six-yard box during the 54th minute.
Sittko and fellow sophomore Katharine Laco (Bethesda, Md.) each took a strike at goal in the 60th and 62nd minute only to find McChesney there for the saves.
Bye-Nagel nearly sent the Wildcat faithful home when in the 96th minute of overtime she broke past two Terrier defenders at midfield, drove into the 18-yard box and fired off a left-footed shot that hit off the top of the crossbar and was gathered in by McChesney.
Despite getting off four shots in the second overtime, Davidson settled for the tie. The Wildcats easily outshot Wofford, 23-8, and picked up eight corners to Wofford's three.
English recorded three saves, while the Terriers' McChesney earned a career-high nine saves.
Davidson will head home for its next two contests starting with a tilt against UNC Greensboro in a matchup of the top-two teams in league play on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.
