The Matchup
The Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams will kick off the 2007-08 season tomorrow afternoon, hosting the East Carolina Pirates at 1 p.m. at the Cannon Natatorium.
Scouting the Wildcats
As Davidson moves from the Colonial Athletic Association to become one of 12 charter members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, the 2007-08 Wildcat swimmers will look to establish a new tradition of excellence for the league.
For the women Wildcats, a recruiting class that runs 10 deep means a larger, but less experienced squad than in years past. The women return leadership in junior Alanna Ream — the school's record-holder in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles, and Wildcat top-10 performers Maddie Stough and Courtney Sanders, while newcomers Lindsey Martin, Alexa Richardson and Anna Stringfield are expected to compete immediately.
The Wildcat men's team returns a large majority of conference scorers and has the potential to establish itself as one of Davidson's all-time best. Unlike the women, however, the squad is much smaller than last season and could be challenged in dual meets by a lack of depth. Yet, the team boasts four school-record holders in seniors Fiete Stegger (50 and 100 free) and William Broughton (1000 free) and juniors Scott Frantz (100 back) and Merritt Peele (200 and 500 free) and welcomes four talented newcomers.
Scouting the Pirates
The Pirate's women's team is led by senior Rebecca Perry — the squad's record holder in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, senior Kim Brewer — a top-10 performer in three events, and senior diver Christie Icenhower, an NCAA Regional Zone qualifier. Perry won a trio of events (50 free, 100 free, 100 back) at the team's Purple and Gold intrasquad meet this past weekend, while sophomore Rachel Blue (200 free, 500 free), junior Amanda Duncan (100 fly, 200 fly) and freshman Stephanie Harper (100 breast, 200 breast) also had multiple wins.
On the men's side, the Pirates return 20 letterwinners and are led by senior Geoff Handsfield —who was tabbed the team's Most Outstanding Swimmer last season, and All-Conference USA performers Charlie McCanless and Greg Neville. Freshman Tommy Ryan (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM) made a splash at the team's intrasquad meet with three wins, while freshman Thiago Calvacanti (500 free, 1000 free), junior Adam Papendick (50 free, 100 free) and freshman Andrew Stoker (100 fly, 200 fly) each won a pair.
Last season, 14 ECU swimmers and one diver earned All-Conference USA at the championship meet, helping the both the men's and women's squads to a third place team finish.
Next-up
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, traveling to Atlanta, Ga. on Sat., Oct. 20, for a 1 p.m. meet at Emory.
