CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- For the fourth time this year the Davidson women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, led by redshirt junior Katie Hamilton's (Lilburn, Ga.) 17 points, and the Wildcats continued their torrid start with a 75-60 win on the road at Western Carolina in Southern Conference action. The Wildcats moved their winning streak to 10 games with the victory, improving their school-best start to 13-2 overall and have a school-best start in league play with a 4-0 mark. Western Carolina dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in SoCon action.
The road win ran the Wildcats' away record to 7-1, another school-best, and they have now won six straight on the road dating back to the 'Cats Nov. 22 win at Winthrop. It was also Davidson's third consecutive win over Western and its fourth in the past five meetings.
Hamilton was 7-of-12 from the field, including a three-pointer and hit both of her free throws as the junior scored in double figures for the eighth time this season. Senior Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) each tallied 10 and 13 points, respectively, while combining to go 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Davidson as a team was 22-of-27 from the free throw line and shot 47.3 percent from the field, including 54.2 in the second half.
Trailing 10-8 early to Western Carolina, sophomore Kelly Gassie (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) started a 16-7 run with a fade away jumper in the paint and finished off the streak with a reverse layup to give Davidson a seven-point advantage at 24-17 with 6:09 left in the first half. Gassie scored all eight of her first-half points in the run and closed out the game with 12 on 5-of-8 shooting and hit two of her four free throws. The sophomore led the Wildcat bench in outscoring the Catamounts, 23-17.
Western Carolina, who struggled to a 27.8 field goal percentage in the first stanza, used a quick 7-2 run, which was finished off by Lynsie Lamitie's three-pointer, to come within two points at 28-26 and under two minutes to go in the half.
Washington halted the Catamounts' momentum by scoring four of the final five Wildcat points at the free throw line. She hit two of them after a getting fouled on a layup and added two more when WCU's Monique Dawson was issued a technical with five seconds remaining in the half. Davidson, who closed the half 7-for-9 from the charity stripe, went into halftime up 33-26.
Hamilton went on a scoring surge in the second half, dropping in nine of the Wildcats' first 15 points to start the second stanza and push Davidson's lead to 16 at 48-32 through the first five minutes of the half. Hamilton scored six of her points the hard way, getting two three-point plays and she added her other three points the old fashion way with a three-ball from the top of the key.
WCU then went on a six-minute run of their own (18-4), cutting the Wildcat lead all the way down from 20 points to six, 58-52, with 5:48 remaining in the contest. Five different players led the charge with Brooke Johnson and Lynsie Lamitie scoring the first 10 points of the run.
Davidson came back with an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 69-52 with a little over three minutes remaining. The Wildcats maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the game on its way to a 75-60 victory.
Seniors Brynn Kelly (Spokane, Wash.) and Jessica Mitchell (Wilkesboro, N.C.) led the Wildcats in rebounds with seven apiece and Davidson hit the 40-board mark for the seventh time this season.
Dawson and Lynsie Lamitie each scored in double digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Lamitie added nine boards and two three-pointers to her stat line.
The Wildcats return home for first time since Dec. 15 when they play host to defending SoCon champion Chattanooga on Jan. 8 at 12 p.m. for Education Day.
