Davidson Swimmers Sweep Competition in Final Home Meet

DAVIDSON, N.C. — In their final home meet of the season, the Davidson men's and women's swimming teams combined for 15 individual titles as both teams completed a sweep of the day's competition. The men's team downed VMI (185-45) and Wingate (128-95), while the women defeated Radford (160-71), VMI (178-29) and Wingate (140-84).
With the wins, the men improve to 6-4-1 overall, and the women, to 5-9 overall.
“This was a productive final dual meet for us,” head coach John Young said. “We received contributions from members of every class. Our seniors were honored today, and the team really fed off the atmosphere, swam fast against good competition, and established positive momentum for the conference meet.”
On senior day at Cannon Natatorium, seniors Brigit Barry, Christie Brough, Ellie Trefzger, Andrew Edelman, Scott Foster, Justin Fried, Mill Graves and Jamie Hopkins were honored before the competition began.
In the final home meet of her career, Trefzger won one of the Wildcats' 15 titles, finishing first in the 1000 free with a time of 10:36.60.
Fellow distance specialist Alanna Ream took home two titles for the women, both the 200 free (1:58.78) and the 500 free (5:13.75), and Courtney Sanders also picked up a pair of wins. Sanders finished first in both the 50 free (25.51) and 100 free (54.03), while Kate Graham was first in the 100 fly (1:00.47).
On the men's side, Fiete Stegger took home the 50 free title with a time of 22.16, and Merritt Peele placed first in the 100 free with a time of 48.27.
Will Broughton was first to touch the wall in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.21, while Scott Frantz claimed the title in the 100 back (53.13).
The men's team capped off an impressive day with a win in the 200 free relay behind a combined time of 1:28.78 from Peele, Jon Smith, Miguel Rodriguez and Andrew Edelman.
On the boards, Stephannie McKinney took both the 1- and 3-meter titles for the women, while Dwight Swift did the same on the men's side.
The men and women's teams will conclude their season at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Fairfax, Va. on Feb. 14-17.
