DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The fourth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Davidson College will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Baker Sports Complex located on the campus of Davidson College. The event is free and open to all girls in kindegarten through eighth grade. Registration will begin at 12 p.m on the day of the event at Belk Arena.
The multi-sports clinic, featuring soccer, volleyball, field hockey and lacrosse, will start at 12:30 p.m. An autograph session with Davidson student-athletes will immediately follow the clinic. Participants will also get a chance to see the Wildcat women's basketball team take on the Georgia Southern Eagles at Belk Arena at 2 p.m. After the game, the Davidson women's basketball players and coaches will host a special pizza party and autograph session.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is designed to provide young girls throughout the Davidson and greater Charlotte community valuable exposure to the opportunities available for women in sports. Furthermore, NGWSD allows these young women to interact with and develop relationships with Davidson College coaches and intercollegiate athletes.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day began in 1987 in rememberance of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since then, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and to recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the seven premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States including the American Association of University Women, Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, the Women's Sport Foundation and the YWCA USA.
