Women Picked To Finish First In SoCon Cross Country Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Southern Conference women's cross country head coaches have selected the Davidson women to finish first in 2006 in the preseason poll released today. The 2006 SoCon Cross Country Championships will be held at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday, October 28.
The women's team beat out Chattanooga by one point for the preseason honor, getting seven first place votes and accumulating 94 points. Led by juniors Brenna Burns (Weaverville, N.C.) and Megal Atias (Maccabim-Reut, Israel), Davidson took home the SoCon title in 2005, edging the Lady Mocs by one point to capture its second league crown in the past three years. Chattanooga had three first place votes and received 93 points to get second place. Appalachian State, who received one first place vote, is picked third with 84 points. Furman received 72 points taking fourth. Elon was picked to finish fifth with 67 points and College of Charleston edges out UNC Greensboro with 48 points for sixth place.
The Wildcats opened up the 2006 season over the past weekend with a fourth-place showing at the Covered Bridge Open.
Davidson will be off this weekend before getting back out on the cross country trails when it heads to the Winthrop Invitational on Sept. 16.
