STATESBORO, Ga. — On the second and final day of competition at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track Championship in Statesboro, Ga., the Davidson women earned points with nine top-eight finishes across eight events, while setting or matching five school records. In addition, Emily King was tabbed SoCon Freshman Runner of the Year after claiming the 10K title on Saturday in a school record time.
King is the first Davidson woman to win an individual running event at the league championship and the first to be named a track runner of the year. In the overall team contest, Appalachian State held onto its first-day lead to claim the women's SoCon title, as the Wildcats finished eighth in the standings.
"We had a good showing at the meet, scoring more points than we ever have and breaking several school records," Davidson head coach Jen Straub said. "It was fun watching our freshmen do so well, and I'm very proud of Emily for her outstanding accomplishment."
Davidson junior Jessica Chasen and senior Allie Martin each placed fourth in their respective events for the team's best individual finishes on the day. Clocking a time of 58.08 in the 400-meter finals, Chasen broke the Wildcat standard she set in yesterday's preliminaries. Meanwhile, Martin replaced her own school record in the 1500-meter run as she crossed the finish line at 4:36.84. The team co-captain also earned points with a seventh-place performance in the 800 meters.
In the 5000-meter race, freshman Caroline Sanker came in fifth with a time of 17:45.13, which replaced the former Davidson record of 17:53.54 set by Wildcat standout Kathy Beach in 1991. The 5K mark made Sanker eligilble to run the event at USA Junior Nationals this June in Indianapolis, where she is also qualified to compete in the 3000 meters. Freshman Kennesia Martin continued the record-setting trend with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump, charting a distance of 37' 7.25” to better the previous standard, which belonged to her as well.
Also earning points for the Wildcat women were sophomore Katurri Phillips with seventh place in the 200-meter dash, sophomore Colleen McKown with eighth in the 800 meters, the fifth-place mile relay team, and the sixth-place 400-meter relay team of Chasen, Phillips, Martin and freshman Kim Colley, who matched the school record at 50.18.
"I really could not have asked for more out of these girls," Straub offered. "I am so proud of them for what they accomplished this season and at the championship."
On the weekend, a total of eight Wildcat records were set or matched, and Davidson earned points in nine events.
