DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior Jessica Mitchell equaled a career-high with 23 points and redshirt junior Katie Hamilton added 18 to lead the Davidson Wildcats to a 75-69 victory over the Charlotte 49ers Saturday evening at Belk Arena. The win was the fifth straight for Davidson (8-2) and ended a personal three-game losing streak against the 49ers. Charlotte dropped to 4-5 on the season.
Davidson's 8-2 start through the first 10 games, matches the 1974-75 team as the best start in school history. In addition, the Wildcats 4-0 record at home so far is the best start at Belk Arena since the 1996-97 squad went 4-0 to start the year.
Mitchell hit 7-of-10 field goals in the contest, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. She also converted all four free throws in the final 10 seconds of the game to seal the victory. Hamilton pitched in three trifectas as well as Davidson hit 8-of-13 (.615) from downtown in the game.
Three 49ers scored in double figures, led by guard Whitney Hoey with 16 points off the bench. Sabrina Gregory tallied 13 and Ashley Spriggs added 10.
Trailing by three with less than five minutes to play, senior Tia Washington scored on a fast-break layup and Mitchell followed with one of her three-pointers in the game to give the Wildcats a 62-60 lead. The 49ers tied the score on a bucket by Gregory, but sophomore Mercedes Robinson scored the next five points on a three-point play and a putback.
Davidson never let Charlotte closer than three the rest of the way thanks to hitting all eight free throws in the final minute of play.
The Wildcats held a 38-33 advantage at the half, but Charlotte pulled even at 41 on a pair of free throws by Danielle Burgin, then took its first lead since 2-0 on a pull-up jumper by Hoey with 14:26 to play.
Davidson briefly retook the lead three minutes later on a three-pointer by Mitchell, giving the 'Cats a 48-47 advantage. Charlotte's Traci Ray responded, however, with a three of her own next time down the court to put the 49ers up by two again. A few minutes later, Hoey hit another jumper to give Charlotte its biggest lead of the game at 59-53 with 6:45 to play before Davidson came back.
The 49ers opened the game by hitting a layup just 13 seconds in, but Davidson rattled off the next 18 points -- 13 by Mitchell -- spanning more than six minutes. Mitchell canned a trio of threes in the spurt and connected on all five of her field goal attempts.
Charlotte gradually battled back, whittling the deficit to as few as two following a driving layup by Traci Ray with just over four minutes left in the half. A three-pointer by Hamilton with 15 seconds on the clock boosted the Wildcat lead back to seven, but Hoey put back her own miss as time expired to make the score 38-33.
The Wildcats had the range from behind the arc in the opening stanza, hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers with Mitchell and Hamilton each drilling three. Mitchell finished the half with 13 points, all in the opening run, while Hamilton contributed 12.
Hoey led the 49ers with nine points while they struggled to find their range, shooting just 37.1 percent (13-of-35) for the half.
Davidson will look to extend its winning streak to six after finals end when it hosts Furman in a Southern Conference game on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. Charlotte returns to the court next Sunday, Dec. 17 when Old Dominion comes to Halton Arena at 1 p.m.
