DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior point guard Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.) gave the Davidson women's basketball team its second straight weekly honor in the past two days when she was named today the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 13 for her excellent work on and off the court. On Tuesday, fellow senior Jessica Mitchell was named the Player of the Week for women's basketball.
The TIAA-CREF student-athlete honor is the second time Washington has earned the weekly academic award as she also earned it on Dec. 21st of last year. The native of Charlotte, N.C. is also a three-time All-SoCon Academic All-Conference team member.
In its only game of the week, Washington helped guide Davidson to a 75-69 win over cross-county rival Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 9, to move the Wildcats' winning streak to five games. The win also snapped a three-game skid against the 49ers and moved the Wildcats all-time series record to 10-9 versus Charlotte.
The senior scored nine points, while pulling down four boards and dishing out a game- and season-high six assists in the win. It was the sixth time this year Washington had dished out four or more assists. The Wildcats' point guard has now dished out at least one or more assists in 41 straight games dating back to Feb. 7, 2005.
Washington has been a key contributor during the Wildcats' five-game winning streak, averaging nearly 10 points a contest and shooting 59.4 percent from the floor. She has also helped Davidson average 19 assists a game by dishing out a team-best 21 during the streak.
On the season, Washington is dropping in 8.5 points per game, while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and hitting at an 81.8 percent clip at the charity stripe (18-for-22). She has a team-high 37 assists, good for fourth in the league, and pocketed 23 steals.
Washington has also excelled in the classroom this year as well. She holds a 3.504 GPA and is majoring in sociology.
Davidson will look to extend its winning streak to six after finals end when it hosts Furman in a SoCon game this Friday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats split its season-series with the Paladins last season, but trail in the all-time series, 25-15.
