DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the first time since Nov. 12, the Davidson women's basketball team returns to its own home floor as they start a four-game homestand on Saturday with a matchup against Emory at 2 p.m. Davidson will also open the Southern Conference portion of its schedule, playing host to UNC Greensboro on Monday, Dec. 4 and play its cross-county rival Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 9 during the stretch. During head coach Annette Watts' five years, Davidson has gone 3-2 in SoCon openers with all three wins coming at Belk Arena.
Davidson (5-2) just concluded a six-game road trip in which it went 4-2. It was the longest road swing since a six-game trip at the start of the 2003-04 season when they went 2-4.
Davidson's final game on the trip was its most impressive to date as the Wildcats had everything working in an 81-63 win at High Point. The 'Cats shot a season-best 54.7 percent from the field, dished out 18 assists, pocketed 11 steals, forced 20 turnovers and held its second straight opponent to under 35 percent shooting. In addition to those numbers, the Wildcats for the first time this year placed five players in double digits and all 12 players on the roster etched their names into the scorer's book.
Davidson finished a perfect 3-0 against Big South opponents this year after opening the season with a win over UNC Asheville and then defeating Winthrop on Nov. 22.
Redshirt junior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) led all Wildcat scorers with 14 points against the Panthers, and paces the team with a 13.3 point per game average. Davidson as a team is averaging nearly 71 points a game, good for second in the SoCon. Junior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) also is averaging in double figures and has the second-best field goal percentage in the SoCon at
56.9 percent.
Davidson's other three starters have also chipped in on both ends of the court. The senior backcourt of Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jessica Mitchell (Wilkesboro, N.C.) have dished out a combined 48 assists, while Washington has been her usual stout self on defense with a team-best 19 steals, 10 of those coming in the past two games. Finally, senior Brynn Kelly (Spokane, Wash.) has been a force down in the paint, averaging nearly six boards a game and eight points.
Emory, a division III school located Atlanta, Ga., comes in sporting a 3-1 mark. The Eagles fell to Oglethrope in their latest game by the count of 77-68. They are coming off a 15-10 season a year ago and return 10 letterwinners, including four of their five starters. Beth Bergmann, who averaged 9.8 ppg last season, has topped that by four points as she leads the Eagle attack with a 13.3 ppg average.
After Emory, Davidson will concentrate on the preseason pick to win it all in the SoCon, UNC Greensboro, on Monday. The Spartans are off to a 5-2 start, but fell in their latest game at No. 2 North Carolina, 103-48. Jasmine Byrd, who was the tournament MVP of UNCG's Thanksgiving tournament, is tops on the team with a 19.7 ppg average. She was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Nov. 28 and is shooting close to 50 percent from the field.
Davidson's other big game during the homestand will be a matchup against cross-county rival Charlotte in a doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. The 49ers have won the last three games between the two schools, including last year's 79-60 win at Halton Arena. Charlotte is currently 3-3 with all three wins having come at home. They will play at Virginia Tech and host Charleston Southern before its matchup against the Wildcats. The 49ers currently have one player averaging in double figures in Sabrina Gregory at 14.8 points per game.
The Wildcats will wrap up its four-game home slate with another SoCon game on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. featuring the Furman Paladins.
All four games can be seen on the internet as Davidson College has partnered with the Southern Conference and XOS Technologies to provide live video streaming over the internet of home women's basketball games.
