DAVIDSON, N.C. — Redshirt junior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) returned to the court for the first time since March of 2005 and turned in a double-double with team highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Davidson women's basketball team a 91-65 exhibition victory over visiting Lander University on Thursday night in Belk Arena.
Hamilton missed all of last season when she tore her ACL during the preseason, but didn't seem to miss a beat in her first live-game action since the Wildcats fell to Western Carolina in the semifinals of the 2005 Southern Conference Tournament. The junior was 7-of-13 from the field, including hitting Davidson's only three-pointer, and hauled in seven of her 12 rebounds on the offensive end. She also chipped in with four assists, three steals and one block.
Hamilton wasn't the only one to reach double-figures as three other 'Cats scored 10 or more points. Senior Brynn Kelly (Spokane, Wash.) finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Mercedes Robinson (Mansfield, Texas) came off the bench for 10 points and six bounds.
Making a solid impression off the bench was freshman Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) as she poured in 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting to give the Wildcats four players in double-figures. The 6-2 post player also pulled down six rebounds in helping Davidson to a 59-39 edge in the rebounding department. Twenty-five of those boards came on the offensive end. Paquette also helped the Wildcats score 50 of their 91 points in the paint as Davidson continually fed their post players for easy looks.
Through the first four-and-half minutes of play, Lander held a slim two-point lead, 10-8, before the Wildcats took the lead for good at 12-10 on a three-point play from sophomore Kelly Gassie (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) with 13:36 left in the first half. Gassie's three-point play started a 17-3 run over the next four minutes to push the Wildcat lead out to 15 points at 28-13. The sophomore guard scored all eight of her points during the run.
Davidson proceeded to push its lead out to 26 points on two free throws by Kelly, before settling for a 25-point advantage, 46-21, heading into halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Wildcats put the game away with another run, this time a 15-4 streak that pushed their lead out to a game-high 36 points, 61-25, at the 12:48 mark. Hamilton and Paquette combined for seven of the 15 points with Paquette capping the run off with two free throws.
The Wildcats would maintain at least a 23-point lead the rest of the way in cruising to the 91-65 win.
For Lander, Chiles and Tiara Good each hit the 20-point plateau to pace the Bearcats on the offensive side of the ball. Good finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-23 shooting and hauled in eight boards, six of which were on the offensive end. Chiles ended the evening 8-of-19 from the field and dished out a team-high four assists.
This was Davidson's lone exhibition game of the year. The Wildcats will now gear up for their first home season-opener since the 1993-94 campaign, when they battle UNC Asheville on Sunday at 3 p.m. Traditionally, the Wildcats have not fared too well in season openers. They are only 4-10 in those contests since the resurrection of the program in 1992. In the last four openers Davidson has played at Duke, at Michigan State and at North Carolina twice.
