DAVIDSON, N.C. — Entering their sixth year under the direction of head coach Annette Watts, the Davidson women's basketball team will jump start its 2006-07 season with an exhibition game against Lander University on Thursday at 7 p.m., before playing host to UNC Asheville on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Belk Arena.
Davidson concluded the 2005-06 season as yet another successful campaign under Watts. The Wildcats won 17 games, while notching 12 victories in the Southern Conference on their way to finishing second in the league. The second-place finish tied the highest in the program's 12 years in the conference.
The Wildcats return four of last season's five starters, including seniors Brynn Kelly (Spokane, Wash.), Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.), and All-SoCon performer Jessica Mitchell (Wilkesboro, N.C.), who averaged nearly 12 points and hit 36 percent of her three pointers last year. In all, Davidson returns nine letterwinners from a year ago, plus the additions of freshmen Moncia Laune (Ashland, Neb.), Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Alexandra Thompson (Asheville, N.C.).
The Wildcats also get a familiar face back in former All-SoCon and 2004 Freshman of the Year Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) after she was lost all of last season due to a preseason injury. Two years ago, Hamilton was second in the league with a 15.8 point-per-game average and she is only 208 points away from becoming the program's 10th player to score 1,000 points.
Recently, Davidson was picked to finish third in the coaches' preseason poll released on Oct. 9 at the annual SoCon Basketball Media Tip-Off event. Mitchell and Hamilton were each honored with a spot on the 10-team preseason all-conference team as chosen by the head coaches.
Lander University is a Division II institution located in Greenwood, S.C. The Bearcats play in the Peach Belt Conference where they finished with only one league win in 20 tries and concluded the season at 5-23 overall. Coincidently, Lander is the alma mater of current assistant coach Stephanie Roe.
After Davidson's only exhibition game of the season, the Wildcats will officially start the year against in-state foe UNC Asheville on Sunday. The Bulldogs, a member of the Big South, are coming off a 15-13 campaign for their third straight winning season under the guidance of head coach Betsy Blose. The Bulldogs welcome back four starters from last year's team and nine letterwinners in all.
Leading the charge for UNCA is junior Ashton Barton, who was Asheville's leading scorer from a year ago with an 11.6 point-per-game average, and senior forward Amanda Elder, who averaged 9.1 points and 6.0 boards per game.
The home season-opener for Davidson against UNC Asheville is its first since the 1993-94 campaign, when the Wildcats opened up against Mars Hill. Traditionally, the Wildcats have not fared too well in season openers. They are only 4-10 in those contests since the resurrection of the program in 1992. In the last four openers Davidson has played at Duke, at Michigan State and at North Carolina twice.
Following the contest against the Bulldogs, the Wildcats will embark on a six-game road trip starting with a visit to East Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
