DAVIDSON, N.C. — After finishing ninth in the NCAA Regionals on Saturday –the first top-10 finish in the program's history, the Davidson women's cross country team finishes the 2006 season ranked ninth in the Southeast regional poll, announced earlier today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Behind top-50 performances from sophomore Caroline Sanker and junior Brenna Burns, the Wildcats raced to a ninth-place finish in the Louisville regional, where six teams qualified for the 2006 Division I Women's Cross Country Championship, the most in any region. With an accumulation of just 266 points, the Davidson women amassed just 84 points more than sixth-place North Carolina, who along with North Carolina State, Duke, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest qualified out of the Louisville regional to advance to the Championship.
Sanker paced the Wildcats in the 6K race with a time of 21:36.80, good for 32nd place out of the 215 runners, while Burns and junior Megal Atias finished 41st and 62nd, respectively. Burns clocked in with a time of 21:55.65, while Atias crossed the finish line at 22:16.35.
Two other runners finished in the top-100 for the Wildcat women as sophomore Emily King had a time of 22:18.70 for 63rd place, and fellow classmate Lucy Rogers ran to a 73rd place finish with a time of 22:24.85.
It is the second regional ranking for the Wildcat women this season. After a dominant first-place performance at the Winthrop Invitational on Sept. 16 , where five Davidson runners turned in top-10 finishes, the team was ranked 10th in the Southeast region in the first weekly poll of the season.
