BOONE, N.C. — The fourth-seeded Davidson Wildcats fell to the fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-27) in the second round of the 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament on Friday morning at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C. Davidson finishes the season with a 18-16 overall record, while the Mocs improve to 13-19 and advance to face the winner of the second semifinal game.
Davidson got 17 kills from All-SoCon selection Liz Williamson, who played her way into second on the all-time kills list and hit a team-high .455 clip, and 16 from junior outside Katie Pierucci, but couldn't recapture the magic of their regular-season victory against the Mocs to work out of the 2-0 hole. The 'Cats fought in game three, getting the score tied at 27 late in the match, but the Mocs won the final three points to survive the attack and advance.
Fellow All-SoCon selection, senior setter Jenna Dykstra continued her record-breaking season, collecting 36 assists to finish her career with 4,075 assists —the new all-time standard, and with 1,444 assists this season, set the new single-season standard as well, surpassing Erica Schwartz (2000, 1,429). Along with Dykstra and Williamson, senior defensive specialist Lisa Cuellar also concludes her career with the Wildcats, posting two service aces and three digs in the match.
For the Mocs, Leslee Ball was the lone hitter in double-digs, recording 13 in 28 attempts for a .393 hitting clip.
The 'Cats got in a 1-6 hole to open game one, but regained possession and senior defensive specialist Lisa Cuellar came off the bench for two quick points to narrow the gap, 3-6. The Mocs extended their lead to 9-3, before a timeout propelled the 'Cats to a 5-0 run to pull within one. Consecutive kills from Willimson knotted the score and then claimed the lead, 13-12, for the first time in the game. The score was knotted several times, at 17 and again at 23, but the 'Cats led until late in the match. With Davidson holding a 28-27 advantage, Chattanooga won the last four points to take the game behind a four-point serve from Jamie Engel, for the 30-28 victory.
Game two was back-and-forth at the beginning before the 'Mocs begin to pull away. Davidson played from behind until a 3-0 run topped by a kill from sophomore blocker Alison Dwyer knotted the score at 8-8. Chattanooga outscored Davidson 6-1 to reclaim a 15-10 lead and force the 'Cats into a timeout. With the 'Cats trailing just 12-16, the Mocs won seven consecutive points to take a commanding 23-12 lead that proved too much. With Chattanooga struggling to close things out, the 'Cats won four points to tighten the gap to 18-27, but the Mocs went on for the 30-20 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After the break, the 'Cats again got into an early hole at the beginning of game three, but after fighting to knot the score at 5-5, took the lead on consecutive attack errors by Engel. Chattanooga went on a 5-1 run to reclaim a 10-7 lead, but Davidson took the next two points to keep things close. A 4-0 run from the Mocs forced the 'Cats into a timeout, trailing 12-16. Chattanooga won three consecutive points to push their lead to 19-12, but Davidson went on a 6-1 run to tighten the score 18-20 and force Chattanooga into a timeout. The two teams traded points with Davidson down just a point on several occassions, until a kill from Pierucci finally tied the match at 25. The possession switched from there, with the score knotted at 26 and 27 until Chattanooga won the final three points to take a 30-27 victory for the match.
