BOONE, N.C. — On opening day of competition in the 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament, Davidson senior setter Jenna Dykstra and senior outside hitter Liz Williamson were named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team, as selected by the league's coaches, at the awards banquet held at Appalachian Ski Mountain on Thursday night in Boone, N.C.
Davidson's floor general for the past three seasons, Dykstra became the program's all-time assist leader on Oct. 28 and enters tournament play with 4,039 career assists. With 1,408 assists this season, she ranks second on the single-season list, just trailing Erica Schwartz (2000, 1,429) for the all-time best year, while her sophomore (1,229) and junior (1,170) season totals also rank among the top-10 single performances. The selection is the first for the senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif., who was also named Southern Conference Player of the Week on Sept. 12 and to both the All-TCU and All-Wildcat Classic Tournament teams.
Named All-Southern Conference for the second consecutive season, Williamson paced the 'Cats offense, posting a team-leading 476 kills (averaging 3.93 kills per game) to go along with 40 service aces, 32 assists, 48 blocks and 316 digs. Her 476 kills this season rank sixth on the single-season list, while her sophomore (513) and junior (452) season totals rank among the top-10 performances as well. Entering the season in eighth-place on the all-time kills list, Williamson goes into tournament play with 1,651 kills— good for third all-time and just ten behind Michele Augustin (1992-95, 1,661). Williamson was named to the league's first team last season.
Earning the fourth seed and a first-round bye, the Wildcats will open play at 10 a.m. Friday with the fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs. Davidson finished the regular season with an 18-15 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the SoCon, while Chattanooga ended the regular period with a 12-19 overall record and 9-8 record in conference play. The two teams met just once during the season, with Davidson getting the dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 (25-30, 20-30, 30-28, 30-24, 18-16) win on Oct. 24.
