No. 4 Volleyball will open SoCon Tourney with No. 5 Chattanooga, Fri.

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson volleyball team earned the fourth seed and a first-round bye in the 2006 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament, which gets underway in Boone, N.C. on Thursday. With a first-round bye, the fourth-seeded Wildcats will take on the fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs in the opening match of the semfinals on Fri., Nov. 17 at 10 a.m.
Davidson finished the regular season with an 18-15 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the SoCon, while Chattanooga ended the regular period with a 12-19 overall record and 9-8 record in conference play.
In addition to Davidson and Chattanooga, three teams received first-round byes. The No 1-seeded College of Charleston, who went 17-1 in the conference, will face the winner of the No. 8 Georgia Southern-No. 9 Western Carolina match in the second semifinal match at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
Furman and Appalachian State finished with identical 15-3 conference records, but the Paladins won the tie-breaker to receive the No. 2 seed and will face the winner of the No. 7 UNC Greensboro-No. 10 Citadel match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Appalachian took the No. 3 seed and will play the winner of the No. 6 Elon-No. 11 Wofford match at 7 p.m. in the final quarterfinal match on Friday.
The winner of the Davidson-Chattanooga match will face the winner of the College of Charleston-Georgia Southern/Western Carolina match in the first semifinal match at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the Furman-UNC Greensboro/Citadel match will take on the winner of the Appalachian-Elon/Wofford match in the second semifinal match at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Championship game will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Wildcats and Mocs met just once in the regular season, at Belk Arena on Oct. 24, with Davidson coming from two games back for a dramatic 3-2 (25-30, 20-30, 30-28, 30-24, 18-16) win. (Full story)
The Mocs are led by junior middle blocker Leslee Ball, who leads the team in kills with 370 (averaging 3.39 per game) while hitting a team-high .274. In 31 matches (109 games), Ball has also recorded 12 assists, 15 service aces, 136 digs and a team-high 95 blocks. The setting duties are split by junior Bethany Herndon, who leads the team with 663 assists, and sophomore Michaela Huff, who follows with 507. Huff also leads the team in service aces with 25, while sophomore libero Lara Newberry paces the Moc defense with 690 digs, while junior outside hitter Kelsey Amundson has contributed 419.
