STATESBORO, Ga. –- The Davidson Wildcats volleyball team fell 3-1 (30-16, 22-30, 30-26, 30-26) in their regular-season finale at Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon.
Davidson finishes the regular season with an 18-15 overall record and 10-8 in the Southern Conference, while Georgia Southern improves to 13-12 and 7-10 in the conference.
Three Wildcat hitters finished the match in double-digits in kills, while four players got into double-digits on the defensive end. Senior outside hitter Liz Williamson paced the 'Cats, recording 19 kills to go along with 18 digs, while junior outside hitter Katie Pierucci (13) and sophomore middle blocker Alison Dwyer (12) also were big contributors to the offensive effort.
Along with Williamson, senior setter Jenna Dykstra also posted a double-double, with 18 digs and 52 assists, while juniors Lindsey Woeste (24) and Courtney Cron (17) paced the defense.
The Eagles controlled the first game, outscoring the Wildcats 30-16. With Davidson trailing just 4-9 in the early frame, Georgia Southern went on a scoring drive, collecting nine of the next 10 points to build an insurmountable 18-5 lead.
The second frame belonged to Davidson, who posted 18 team kills and two blocks, to down the Eagles and even the match at 1-1. Holding a slim 20-17 margin, the 'Cats used a couple of four-point runs to bust the game open, including four kills by Williamson, for the 30-22 win.
In contrast to the first two, game three was anybody's for the taking, with neither team able to get a big lead. An Eagle service ace tied the score at 15 all at the midway point, and Georgia Southern took the next point to begin to build a lead. The score was even as late as 24-24, but four straight points from the Eagles built a 29-25 advantage, and after a GSU ball handling error, the Eagles put away the next ball to win the game by a margin of 30-26 and go up 2-1 in the match.
The final game was neck-and-neck, with Davidson fighting to extend the match. The score was again knotted at 15 halfway through, before the Eagles were able to take advantage of Wildcat attacking errors to secure the win. The 'Cats attempted a rally late, posting three consecutive points, but the bid fell short in the 30-26 defeat to surrender the match.
