2006-07 Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team announced the release of its 2006-07 schedule today, featuring a game against NCAA Tournament qualifier Georgia, dates in the state of Washington against Gonzaga and Eastern Washington, and a trip to The Ohio State University for the 2006 Klosterman Buckeye Classic, as well as its 18-game Southern Conference slate.
The Wildcats can be expected to challenge for the league title once again after finishing tied for second at 12-6 in 2005-06. Davidson returns nine letterwinners from a team that went 17-12 overall, including junior Katie Hamilton who missed all of last season after a preseason injury. The SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2003-04 was second in the conference in scoring in 2004-05 at 15.8 points per game.
Davidson is no stranger to playing a tough non-conference schedule to prepare itself for SoCon play. During head coach Annette Watts' five-year tenure at Davidson, the Wildcats have played the likes of Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Michigan State and Missouri.
“I'm a firm believer that a challenging non-conference schedule will make a team have the instincts and toughness it needs down the stretch, especially when it comes to conference games,” Watts stated.
Looking to build upon their 17-win season from a year ago, the Wildcats face a difficult test when they open up the season on the road for six of its first seven games. Their lone home game during the stretch is their season-opener on Nov. 12 against UNC Asheville, the first meeting between the two since 1993.
Highlighting the six road contests will be a game against former SoCon member East Tennessee State, a matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs and the in-season tournament at Ohio State. Davidson will battle ETSU on Nov. 17 for the first time since the Bucs left the SoCon in 2005. The Wildcats won the last meeting, 68-56.
Next up is Georgia, a team the 'Cats have never faced. The Bulldogs are coming off a 23-9 season in which they advanced to the “Sweet 16” and finished the season 12th in the Associated Press poll.
After a trip to Winthrop, the team heads up to Columbus, Ohio to play at the Klosterman Buckeye Classic on Nov. 25-26 where the Wildcats will take on Montana first, then either Cornell or host Ohio State. The Buckeyes, like Georgia, advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year and posted a sparkling record of 29-3.
Following the six-game road trip, Davidson will host four consecutive games, beginning with Emory on Dec. 2. Two days later the Wildcats will begin their quest for a SoCon title with a showdown against UNC Greensboro in Belk Arena. Payback will be on the minds of the 'Cats as UNCG knocked them out of the league tournament in the semifinals last year.
Davidson welcomes Charlotte on Dec. 9 for the annual clash against its cross-county rival, the 19th meeting between the two schools. Both teams have won nine of the first 18 contests, but the 49ers have won the last three.
The Wildcats finish up their non-conference portion of the schedule with their first-ever trip to the state of Washington to play at Eastern Washington and Gonzaga on Dec. 18 and 20, respectively.
Once the new year arrives, the Wildcats will be in the thick of SoCon play, starting at College of Charleston on Jan. 1 and ending at Furman on Feb. 25. Chattanooga has topped the SoCon in the regular season each of the past six years, making the game at Chattanooga on Jan. 8 an early test. The 'Cats will also host the Lady Mocs on Feb. 5. Should the regular-season crown come down to the final games, Davidson will have to fight its way through the last three games, all on the road. Over the last two seasons, the Wildcats are 14-13 on the road.
Chattanooga will not be Davidson's lone competition in the league. “Once again the conference is solid from top to bottom,” commented Watts. “Night in and night out, every game will be a tough one.”
