Women's head lacrosse coach Betsy Economou announced the hiring of Caroline McGuire as the program's new assistant lacrosse coach on Jan. 9.

“Caroline brings a great and vast deal of playing and coaching experience that I really think will help us to continue to develop exceptional student-athletes here at Davidson,” said Economou. “She was a standout player for Richmond who understands the game and will do a solid job in bringing plenty of knowledge and energy to our team. I am extremely excited that Caroline has joined our Davidson lacrosse family.”

A four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Richmond and a IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American as a senior, McGuire comes to Davidson after serving as director and assistant coach for the NewLax Lacrosse Club in Darien, Conn. While there, she organized and planned various tournaments and events, while running practices and coaching games throughout the year.

A native of Darien, Conn., McGuire led the Spiders to Atlantic 10 conference titles in 2005 and 2006, while also appearing in the NCAA tournament both seasons. After leading her squad to a win in the Atlantic 10 Championship, McGuire was featured in May 2006 Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd".

She started all but three of her 67 games played at midfield during her career. In senior campaign, McGuire led the Spiders with a career-high 59 goals and 68 points, while tallying a career-best nine assists in 20 games on her way to all-america status. The 59 goals rank tops in program history in a single season, and her 68 points are tied for third most.

Elected a captain during her senior season, McGuire was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2006. She was also awarded Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Tournament in 2006 as well as 2005.

In 2005, McGuire led the Spiders in points (45), goals (44), ground balls (49), draw controls (37), game-winning goals (6), shots (110), shots on goal (68) and caused turnovers (32). Her 44 goals equaled the program's fifth-best for a single season.

For her career, McGuire finished with 143 goals, 16 assists and 159 points. Her goal total ranks first in the career record book, while the 159 points are tied for third most. She also ranks second in the single season record books in ground balls with 48 and for a career with 119.

Named to the womenslacrosse.com Honor Roll in 2005, McGuire graduated in 2006 with a degree in rhetoric and communication studies and earned a minor in sociology.
