Women's Lacrosse

Betsy Economou
- Title:
- Head Coach
Betsy Economou begins her second year at the helm of Davidson’s lacrosse program.
“We are very pleased to have Betsy join us,” Davidson’s Director of Athletics Jim Murphy said. “Her drive and love of the game are evident in her coaching style. I’m confident that we have assembled a coaching staff that will move our lacrosse program forward.”
While her tenure with the Wildcats marks her first Division I head coaching experience, Economou’s extensive coaching background spans 10 years and includes time with both women’s lacrosse and soccer programs on both the high school and collegiate levels.
An Extensive Coaching Background
In her first season at the helm of the Wildcat lacrosse program, Economou guided the team to a 5-8 record. Davidson set a school record by winning its final five contests for the program's longest winning streak. In addition, it set another program bench mark by allowing just 146 goals in its 13 games, besting the mark of 177 set in 1997.
Economou began coaching at her alma mater, Loyola (Md.) College, in 1996, where she spent two seasons as an assistant women’s soccer coach.
In 1998, Economou was named the varsity girls’ head lacrosse coach at Greenwich High School in Connecticut, where she guided the Cardinals to an impressive 42-22 overall record as well as the school’s first state championship in 2001.
Developing the Best
In 2002, Economou launched Impact Lacrosse, one of the premier developmental girls lacrosse programs in the country, now based in Charlotte. She serves as president, head coach and lead instructor.
In the program’s first two years, over 50 high school-aged girls participated in the travel program.
In just four years, Impact Lacrosse has grown to over 150 members, and Economou has been involved in the recruitment process of over 100 young women.
Playing Career
Economou was a three-sport varsity athlete at Loyola, where she earned All-America honors in lacrosse and graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer in women’s soccer in 1994.
Her prep days were storied as well, as she was named both Maryland’s High School Athlete of the Year and Lacrosse Player of the Year in 1990.
Personal
Economou’s husband Greg serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Charlotte Bobcats Sports & Entertainment, and the pair has three sons — Rip, 8; Luke, 6; and A.J., 3.
