Usha Gilmore, a four-year starter at Rutgers (1996-00), brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to Davidson as she enters her third year.
“On the court, Usha will be in charge of our post play and I certainly believe our players will reap a multitude of benefits from her knowledge of the game,” said Watts.
Prior to being at Davidson, Gilmore served as an assistant coach at Longwood University where the Lancers were competing in their second year of transition from Division II to Division I basketball. Her main duties at Longwood included recruiting, scouting, coaching the guards and serving as basketball camp director. She also spent a year as an assistant at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (2003-04) and two seasons at Wagner College (2001-03) in New York.
As a collegiate player at Rutgers, Gilmore was the under the tutelage of Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Coach C. Vivian Stringer. The guard helped the Scarlet Knights to an overall record of 88-41 in her time at Rutgers including three NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the 2000 NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four. Following her collegiate career, Gilmore was drafted in the third round by the WNBA’s Indiana Fever where she played guard for one year.
A native of Moncks Corner, S.C., Gilmore received her bachelor of science degree in sociology with a minor in African-American studies from Rutgers. She was the 1996 Miss South Carolina Basketball Player of the Year and 1996 South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
