Daniel Metzelfeld enters his third season on staff with the Davidson women’s basketball program, after a one-year stint with the University of North Carolina.
Heading into the 2021-22 season Metzelfeld will serve in his second year as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, while being responsible for the program's Midwest recruiting efforts, after previously assisting as Director of Player Development with Davidson during the 2018-19 campaign.
While with the Tar Heels in 2019-20, Metzelfeld served as the Director of Player Personnel, Development and Recruiting Operations, where he broke down practice and game film, along with preparing opponent scouting reports. He also assisted with recruiting visits and game analysis.
During his first stop at Davidson, Metzelfeld helped the ‘Cats set a program-best 10 conference wins and win their first Atlantic 10 tournament game under Gayle Coats Fulks’ second season at the helm. That year, the Wildcats also reached the postseason for the first time since 2012-13 after earning a berth to the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
Before his time at Davidson, Metzelfeld conducted private and group skill development sessions through his company Train University Basketball, along with coaching on the club basketball circuit with ALL IN Athletes. Through this combination of training and coaching, Metzelfeld was able to assist in developing multiple top 100 recruits across the college basketball landscape.
Metzelfeld got his start in collegiate coaching as an assistant women's basketball coach at his alma mater, Trinity International University, from 2013-2017. During his time with the Trojans, he assisted with practice plans, in-game strategy, scouting opponents and video exchange. Additionally, he was involved with in-season and off-season skill development while also serving as the recruiting coordinator.
After beginning his playing career at Indiana University East, Metzelfeld spent his final three years playing at Trinity International, in Deerfield, Ill. While a student-athlete at Trinity International, Metzelfeld started coaching AAU girls basketball with Full Package Athletics in 2011. As a senior, he was named team captain while leading his team in scoring with 14.6 points per game. His play earned him Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention as well as NCCAA All-Region team and the team's Most Outstanding Player Award.
A native of Indianapolis, Metzelfeld graduated from Trinity International in 2013 with a degree in athletic training. He went on to earn a master's degree in administrative studies with a concentration in sports management from Missouri State in 2016
