Wildcats Fall to Mountaineers in Four Sets

BOONE, N.C. – Despite a four-set loss to App State on Sunday, Elena Garcia-Guerrios compiled her fifth double-double this season with a career-high 26 kills and a season-high 15 digs. Those 26 kills are the most by a Davidson volleyball scholar-athlete since Hattie Rodriguez in 2021.
The Wildcats got off to a strong start in the opening set. After losing three straight points, Davidson won six of the final eight points and grabbed the set 25-23. Garcia-Guerrios and Mia Compas combined for 14 kills without a single attack error in this frame.
App State took the second set 25-21 and won the third set 25-20.
Davidson began the fourth set with major production at the service line. Jordan Hummel recorded back-to-back aces and Kinsey Smith added one as well. The Wildcats led by as many as three points mid-way through the fourth. The Mountaineers only recorded two attack errors in the entire frame and went on to close out the match 25-18.
For the second straight match, Kinsey Smith held down the setter position for Davidson. The sophomore posted 40 assists and added 11 digs. Adlee Grissett was also very involved for the second consecutive match. The freshman secured a career-high 12 digs on the afternoon against App State. Jordan Hummel was very active as well in the back row with 22 digs.
In addition to Elena Garcia-Guerrios, Mia Compas was a huge part of the offense. The junior had 11 kills with a .308 hitting percentage.
Jordan Hummel and Kinsey Smith earned all-tournament honors across two matches for the App State Invitational. Smith dished out 87 assists and had 23 digs this weekend. Hummel had 40 digs, three service aces, and only one reception error.

The Wildcats open up A10 play at home against the defending regular season champs, Dayton Flyers, on Friday and Saturday. First serve on Sept. 26 is slated for 7 p.m. with the second match on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. inside Belk Arena.
