STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Davidson women's basketball team fell to Mississippi State 66-57 in the season opener at Humphrey Coliseum Monday Night.

The Wildcats battled throughout the night, exchanging the lead four times and tying the game seven times.

Freshman forward Ines Garcia Monje tied the team lead in scoring with 11 points, while collecting a team-high six rebounds in her first collegiate appearance. Charlise Dunn also scored 11 points as 10 of the 11 Wildcats who saw playing time recorded a basket.

Destiney McPhaul led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Favour Nwaedozi tallied a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Mississippi State, which outrebounded the 'Cats 42-27.

Davidson kept pace with the Bulldogs throughout the first half, trailing by one at the end of the first quarter and tying the game on buzzer beating three by Angeliki Ziaka to end the first half. The 'Cats opened the second quarter with a 8-0 run at the 9:24 mark, extending their largest lead of the game to eight points.

In the third quarter, Mississippi State and Davidson went back-and-forth with the lead as the teams exchanged free throws. Overall, the Wildcats shot 17-of-20 from the free throw line while Mississippi State shot 21-of-31.

The 'Cats opened the final frame with a Katie Donovan three-pointer that tied the game at 47-all but failed to recapture the lead for the remainder of the game as the Bulldogs continued to plug away at the charity stripe.

Overall, the Wildcats generated 18 turnovers, and led the Bulldogs 28-19 in bench points.
