Breiter Makes History; Masterman and Thompson Medal on Day One of A-10 Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Grahm Breiter became the first Wildcat to win gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Fairfax, Va on Saturday. Nick Masterman and Chris Thompson also won silver and bronze in the javelin to put the 'Cats fourth on the team leaderboard.
In just his sixth start in the event, Grahm Breiter now owns a conference gold and silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The California native came into Saturday evening's race with the fastest qualifying time by seven seconds and used a four-second lead to capture the school's first A-10 title. Today's time of 9:01.36 also gave Breiter the top-three fastest times in program history.
Also scoring big for Davidson was the javelin tandem of Nick Masterman and Chris Thompson. The junior-freshman combo took silver and bronze to score 14 team points. Masterman threw the second-furthest mark in school history by measuring out to 58.91 meters on his first attempt. Thompson sent his second toss 50.72 meters to medal in his first collegiate season.
In qualifying events, five Wildcats will run it back for a chance at hardware tomorrow. Jayden Smith and Isaac Bynum are set to go in the 110-meter hurdle finals. Smith ran the top-qualifying time at 14.13 seconds, and Bynum clocked in at 14.98.
Smith also qualified for the 100-meter final with a 10.74 while Bynum will run in tomorrow's 400-meter hurdle final after a qualifying mark of 55.50.
Sprinter Chinedu Okeke ran the third-fastest qualifying time in the 100 alongside Smith. Okeke clocked in at 10.71 seconds, the second-fastest all-time.
Will Holden-Wingate sits ninth in the decathlon with 2,424 points heading into the final day.
Championship weekend action concludes tomorrow with eight individuals and two relay teams set for action.
