WASHINGTON — Davidson pitcher Cooper Cavanaugh has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
A freshman left-hander from eastern North Carolina, Cavanaugh thrived in his college debut against Morehead State, starting and striking out nine in 4.2 innings in a 16-5 Wildcats' win.
"Coop threw well Saturday against a veteran offense," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "It was great for him to come out with a strong start. Our team has a lot of confidence in him."
Against Morehead, Cavanaugh retired the first six batters he faced and struck out two in the first, second, third and fifth innings. He allowed just two singles and walked one.
Cavanaugh and the Wildcats are 1-2 as they head to Charlotte Tuesday afternoon.
