DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 non-conference victory over Queens Univeristy Friday in its season and home opener inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Friday's win gets the 'Cats started at 1-0 overall on the year while the Royals move to 0-4 on the season following the loss.
"Today was a battle, and we had some adversity," said head coach Susanne Depka. "We handled ourselves well and worked through using the processes. I'm proud of everyone's effort and focus today. Great first start."
Queens' No. 2 pairing of Lucy Hogan and Jessica Maras recorded a 6-2 win against Daniela Porges and Charlotte Calderwood, but any thought of the Royals taking the doubles point was put to rest when the No. 1 and No. 3 teams of Emma Heiderscheit and Kavya Patel as well as Savanna Kollock and Bryson Langford earned 6-2 and 6-0 wins respectively.
Heiderscheit battled Katsiaryna Tuliakova in the first position to a 6-1, 6-3 loss to score Queens' lone point of the match and avoid the shutout. Porges picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory out of position three while Patel and Langford in positions four and five with tidy 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 wins respectively.
At No. 6, Calderwood was able to hold off Audrey Serb for a 7-5 win in the first set before capturing the point with a clean 6-0 second set.
Kollock and Jessica Maras battled in the second position with Maras taking the first set 6-2 and Kollock fighting her way to a 6-4 second set to push a full third set. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Arizona was able to put the match away with a 6-2 win to put the finishing touches on the day for the 'Cats.
Davidson will pick back up on Sunday when they welcome Appalachian State for a 2 p.m. match inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
