DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball pushed reigning A-10 champion Loyola Chicago to its limit on Friday night, erasing a 2-0 match deficit before ultimately falling 3-2 to the Ramblers inside John M. Belk Arena.
Loyola swung .182 overall, but hit .239 over the first two sets, while holding Davidson at a .112 clip to put the 'Cats in an early 2-0 hole. The Ramblers also came up with 14 total blocks and aced Davidson six times.
While the 'Cats dropped a 25-23 nailbiter in set two, Loyola and Davidson played another close set in the third. Down the stretch, the Ramblers found themselves with five different match-point opportunities, but Davidson was able to fight off each one before eventually capitalizing on its third set-point chance, to claim the 32-30 decision and push things to a fourth.
A 7-1 run in the fourth, which included a pair of kills from Mia Compas and two Wildcat service aces, allowed Davidson to force a deciding fifth set.
The 'Cats led 11-8 in the final frame before Loyola flipped the script and capitalized on a 7-2 run of its own to pull off the 3-2 thriller.
Senior Sola Omonije led the offense, recording 11 kills on 19 attempts, while Xuan Nguyen dished 28 assists. Bella Brady and Elena Garcia-Guerrios each picked up 23 digs.
