Field Hockey Falls to Towson in Overtime
8/27/2023 5:27:00 PM | Field Hockey
TOWSON, MD. — The Davidson field hockey team battled through 80 minutes of play and into a shootout Sunday afternoon, but the Wildcats ultimately came up on the short end of a 3-2 contest with Towson.
Just like in Friday's season-opening win over Georgetown, the Wildcats (1-1) overcame a two-goal deficit Sunday. They tied it at 2-2 early in the fourth quarter on Sib Naaktgeboren's unassisted goal, and the score remained the same through the end of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
In the shootout, a stroke by Towson's Sarah Hatfield proved to be the difference. By winning the shootout 1-0, Towson (1-1) was credited with a team goal to make it a 3-2 final.
Towson held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a first-quarter Hatfield goal, then made it 2-0 on a goal by Gianna Antone at the 40:51 mark. Davidson countered less than two minutes later when Celie Constantine scored off an assist from Macy Curtis, after Constantine was the inserter on a penalty corner. Naaktgeboren scored just 4:01 later, and the stage was set for a tight finish.

The home opener is next — Davidson will host Queens Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.
