NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson catcher Jacob Friend has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
It's the first weekly honor for Friend, a sophomore from Arlington, Va., and he's the second Wildcat recognized by the league this season, joining first baseman Michael O'Shaughnessy, who was Rookie of the Week on April 3.
Friend had an impactful weekend as the Wildcats won two of three against A-10 foe VCU. Friend hit .667 (6-for-9) with three home runs and seven RBIs.
In Thursday's 13-5 series-opening win, Friend hit a grand slam in the Wildcats' six-run fourth inning and added a solo home run in the eighth. Friday, he went 3-for-4, and Saturday, he hit a two-run homer and walked twice.
For the week, Friend had a 2.417 OPS, including a .750 on-base percentage and a 1.667 slugging percentage.
Friend and the Wildcats will play Saint Louis next weekend at Wilson Field.
