3/31/2023 8:31:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Meghan Burkholder and Natalie Abernathy each set new school records to pace the Davidson women's track and field team on the first day of the VertKlasse Meeting on Friday.
Burkholder, a junior from Cozad, Neb., entered the week as the top pole vaulter in the Atlantic 10 and further solidified her spot by the end of the day. The Nebraska native made quick work of her runs at 3.47 meters and 3.62 meters, clearing the bar on the first try each time. She then cleared a school-record height of 3.77 meters on her second run to secure a top-five finish and a new personal-best. Burkholder snapped her own outdoor school record which was 3.75 meters which she set last year at the South Carolina Open (4/23/22).
Another Wildcat to make school history was senior Natalie Abernathy. Abernathy, a native of Tampa, Fla., finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and set a new program record when she crossed the line in 11:08.28. This time broke Caroline Willis' record of 11:09.00 from 2021 and shattered Abernathy's previous PR time by 16 seconds.
Riley Dodd finished within the top 10 in Group B of the high jump after she leaped over the bar successfully at 1.54 meters to grab a ninth-place finish.
In the 1,500 meters, Frances Whitworth set a new PR and finished inside the top-20 when she clocked in at 4:41.84. Alexandra Cisneros ran a season-best mark of 5:00.22 while Lilly Sirover and Tate Arrington were close behind at 5:02.22 and 5:02.96 respectively.
The women's track and field team will wrap up action in High Point tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m.
