KINGSTON, R.I. – The Davidson men's track team finished third at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships on Sunday behind four first place finishes and eight podium-worthy performances. The Wildcats were also the only team to sweep the podium when Jayden Smith, Jordan Benson, and Isaac Bynum finished top-three in the 60-meter hurdles.
"We had an amazing meet and we could not be prouder of our guys," said head coach Renny Waldron. "They competed their hearts out and fought to the very end in every event. We came into the meet with a lot of points to make up and guys stepped up and then some. It was a complete team effort, with people scoring in every event area-- sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, mid-distance, distance and relays."
Rhode Island earned the most team points with 175 followed by George Mason with 132.5. Davidson secured 101 points marking the second straight year the 'Cats have earned over 100 points at the Indoor Championships.
Joe dosReis, Jayden Smith, and Owen Drometer were crowned individual champions while Bryce Anthony and Jack Curtin took second and third in their events. Also, Davidson's 4x800 relay team snapped the school record and took first place.
In the first track event of the day, Joe dosReis continued to assert his dominance in the mile. The Smithfield, R.I. native broke the meet record and was crowned the Atlantic 10 champion when he ran a 4:06.74. This gave him his second consecutive A-10 indoor title in the event. dosReis was not finished as he ran anchor on Davidson's first place-finishing 4x800 relay team to cap his weekend with three gold medals.
Later in the afternoon, the Wildcats secured a clean sweep of the podium in the 60-meter hurdles for the first time in school history. Sophomore Jayden Smith grabbed first place and nearly broke the school record, which he set earlier this winter, when he crossed the line in 7.77 seconds. With the win, Smith secured the top spot at the A-10 Indoors in back-to-back seasons. Jordan Benson finished second after he ran an eight-flat, and Isaac Bynum earned his first-career individual medal with a third-place finish in a time of 8.10.
Senior Owen Drometer earned his first-career individual first place medal when he won the 1,000 meters. Drometer ran back-to-back personal-best times on the weekend and finished Sunday's final in 2:26.76 to capture the top spot. The Medfield, Mass., native also ran the third leg on Davidson's winning 4x800 relay team to finish the weekend with two first-place medals.
Bryce Anthony also made his way to a podium spot in the 500-meter finals. Anthony ran a time of 1:05.42 to earn a second-place finish. It was just the third time Anthony has run the event, and it gives the Greensboro native his eighth career A-10 medal.
In the triple jump, Jack Curtin turned in a record-breaking performance to find his way onto the podium. Curtin, a native of Andover, Mass., took third place with a new school record leap of 14.60 meters.
Davidson ended the day on a high note when their 4x800 relay team consisting of Jack Muldoon, Miles Kominsky, Owen Drometer, and Joe dosReis took home another relay championship. The 'Cats finished with a time of 7:38.76 to snap the school record and give Davidson the 4x800 indoor crown after finishing second at last year's indoor championship.
"We have a special group of seniors," added Waldron about his seniors. "They have led the way in competition, with being great leaders and teammates, and in the classroom. We're thankful to have them for one more season, and we know it's going to be a special one!"
The men's track team will now aim their focus on the outdoor season which will begin on March 16 at UNC Charlotte's 49er Classic.
