AMES, Iowa – Tanner Peake and Bryce Sanderlin competed at the Iowa State Last Chance Open on Sunday to further their chances at qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Peake finished second in the 157-pound weight class while Sanderlin took third in the 165-pound division.
Coming off yesterday's win in dual action against Gardner-Webb, Tanner Peake continued to prove he is a force to be reckoned with. The freshman from New Jersey cruised to a major decision victory in the first round over Wisconsin's Cody Goebel. He then defeated Minnesota's Sebas Swiggum to earn a spot in the 157-pound championship. In the final, Peake fell to Iowa State's Cam Robinson in an 11-4 decision, giving him a second-place finish and a 2-1 record on the day.
Peake now has an overall record of 13-3 in the 157-pound class.
In the 165-pound weight class, Bryce Sanderlin began his day with a 6-1 victory over Iowa State's Caden Schmidt. In the semis, Iowa State's Manny Rojas defeated Sanderlin in a close match that ended in a 5-3 decision. Sanderlin stayed locked in and won the next two matches in the consolation bracket to walk away with third place.
Sanderlin is now 18-6 on the year as a 165-pounder.
The duo will now shift their focus to the Southern Conference Championships on March 4.
