Brady Captures 1,000th Dig in Program's First Win Over Dayton

9/30/2022 9:40:00 PM | Volleyball

DAYTON, Ohio – Three sets was all it took for the Davidson Wildcats to make history on Friday night, defeating Atlantic 10 juggernaut Dayton for the first time ever in a 3-0 sweep from inside the Frericks Center.

In addition to the statement victory, junior libero Bella Brady captured the 1,000th dig of her career with her eighth pickup of the night.

Entering tonight's match, the Dayton Flyers had won 26 straight Atlantic 10 matches, with their last defeat coming in February of 2021, in a 3-2 loss to Saint Louis. Prior to tonight, the Wildcats had only ever defeated Dayton in one set in 13 previous meetings.

Overall, the Wildcats hit .258 as a team while holding the Flyers to a .160 attacking percentage. Jackie Bardin paced Davidson's offense, hitting a match-high .429 and joining Isabel Decker for a match-high 12 kills each. Middle blocker Anela Davis had a monstrous, seven-block night, as rookie Emma Slusser also added five blocks and nine kills. Brady ended the night with 18 digs, bringing her career total to 1,010, and Kayla Davis and Sola Omonije each finished the match with a noteworthy .400 attacking percentage.

The Wildcats fought back and forth during set one, as the Flyers came out strong and pulled ahead to a 22-18 lead. From the end line, Anela Davis led the 'Cats on a three-point run to bring the 'Cats back within one, while Bardin came up with three kills down the stretch to push Davidson past Dayton 27-25.

With the momentum in their favor, the 'Cats hit .358 through the first 13 points of the second set and took a commanding 13-7 lead early. While the Flyers crawled back, and took their first lead of the frame at 19-16, the Wildcats answered back with a 4-0 run, and one of Anela Davis' four solo blocks of the night, to regain the lead for good and win the second, 25-22.

In the final frame, the 'Cats and Flyers were once again tied up, 17-17, before Jessie Doyal ignited a 7-0 run from the service line that pushed Davidson past Dayton 25-18 to clinch the three-set sweep.

With the victory, the Wildcats remain undefeated at 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play and are 9-5 overall.
