Field Hockey Pushes No. 22 UMass to Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. — Davidson gave No. 22 UMass all it could handle Friday afternoon in a 2-1 overtime loss in Atlantic 10 field hockey.
Sarah Minges' goal, after a penalty corner, tied the game with less than eight minutes to play in regulation, and the center back's first career score put the Wildcats in position for the upset.
Throughout, the Wildcats' defense limited UMass opportunities and kept it close.
"I'm extremely proud of the way we defended as a team today," said coach Zoe Almquist. "Our defense generated our attack, and we approached the entire game with an incredible amount of energy and intensity. While we ultimately lost, it was tremendous to see how we executed our gameplan the entire game. To limit UMass to zero shots or corners in the second half is particularly telling of the momentum we had going."
Davidson threatened multiple times late in the fourth quarter before UMass ended it with a Steph Gottwals goal 1:47 into the extra session.
The Wildcats and Minutewomen finished with five corners apiece, with three of Davidson's coming in the fourth quarter.
