CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcats took down their cross county rival, Charlotte on Thursday night, beating the 49ers 3-1 after notching a season-high 68 kills.
With the win, Davidson picks up its sixth victory of the season and first win over Charlotte since 2018.
Sophomore Isabel Decker paved the way for the 'Cats, recording a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs, while libero Bella Brady had a match-high 18 digs. The Wildcats matched their season-high with seven service aces, three of which came from Brady, and setters Xuan Nguyen (22) and Jessie Doyal (27) combined for 49 of Davidson's 62 assists.
Senior Anela Davis led the Wildcats at the net, with five blocks and a .500 attacking percentage (6 kills, 12 attempts) while Sola Omonije had a career-high 14 kills, swinging .323.
Davidson jumped out to a strong start, led by a block from Omonije and Brady's first ace, taking an early 6-1 lead. Charlotte would later take on a 6-1 run of its own, pulling ahead 23-21 in the closing minutes of set one before Jackie Bardin aced the 49ers and Doyal caught the home team off guard with a set-point dump.
The 'Cats strung together another set victory in the second, 25-22, hitting .273 and connecting for 18 kills with a 16-23 effort on serve receive.
After dropping the third set, 25-23, Davidson and Charlotte battled point-for-point in the fourth frame. The 49ers started off the set with the hot hand, building to a 10-7 lead before a Charlotte service error allowed Omonije to put two away and tie things up at 10-all. A kill from Anela Davis would later put Davidson up 15-13, for its largest lead of the set, but the 49ers went back and forth with the 'Cats and tied the game back up at 18.
With victory in sight, 22-20, Davidson turned to its rookie Slusser, as the Minnesota native came up with the final three points of the match off a block assist with Davis and back-to-back kills on the right side.
