DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson College volleyball team won in a decisive three-set match on Thursday night, sweeping NC A&T (25-22, 25-13, 25-22) in the 2022 home opener.
"Tonight was a night where we struggled in certain areas, defensively and serving, and we were still able to win the match," said head coach Chris Willis. "I believe that is a great combination for learning and growing as we move forward with our season."
The Wildcats' defensive effort at the net was remarkable, as they combined for 9 total team blocks. Freshman Kayla Davis had four block assists and one solo block, while Sola Omonije had a match-high five block assists and Anela Davis added two block assists and a solo stop.
Anela Davis and Omonije added five kills apiece to the scoresheet, in addition to eight kills each from rookies Jackie Bardin and Emma Slusser. In the backcourt, libero Bella Brady held a match-high 16 digs, followed by 10 from Isabel Decker and another nine from Sophia Hritz.
Overall, Davidson swung .208 at the net and held the Aggies to a .019 attacking percentage.
After capturing a close first set victory 25-22, Davidson's offense steadied itself and swung a solid .290 (13 kills, 31 attempts) in the second. With the set tied 6-6, Brady led the 'Cats on a 7-point tear from the service line, taking a 13-6 lead. From there, Anela Davis, Kayla Davis and Omonije shut down any threat from the Aggies' offense and solidified the 25-13 win.
In the third, the Wildcats had their backs against the wall, trailing 17-11. But with a quick side out from senior Paige Johnson, back-to-back blocks from Kayla Davis and Omonije and a service ace from Jessie Doyal, Davidson managed to crawl from behind and tie things up at 20-all. While Slusser kept the match tied 22-22 with a right side kill, one more monstrous block from Anela Davis and back-to-back kills from Doyal would eventually lift the 'Cats to the 25-22 comeback win.
