DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson Football opens its 2022 season on the road against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Jacksonville, Ala. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at Burgess-Snow Field.
THE SERIES
Jacksonville State and Davidson's only previous meeting came in the 2021 FCS Playoffs. The Gamecocks won the lone game in the series, 49-14, over the Wildcats, who were making their first postseason appearance in 52 years.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson heads into this season fresh off its second PFL Championship in as many years. The title marked the second conference championship for Davidson in 52 years and second under Head Coach Scott Abell, the two-time PFL Coach of the Year.
The Wildcats were selected to three-peat and finish atop the conference in the PFL preseason coach's poll for the third straight year. Davidson earned 98 of 100 available points (coaches are not allowed to vote for their respective teams) and garnered 8 of the 11 available first-place votes.
Going into this season, the 'Cats had four selections to the preseason All-PFL team, two Preseason All-Americans, an AFCA Good Works Team Nominee and a spot on the Buck Buchanan Watch List.
The backfield duo of returning backs, senior Dylan Sparks and redshirt senior Coy Williams combined for 24 touchdowns a year ago, while All-PFL selection Beck Kipperman and center Chris Turberville were both mainstays on the offensive line. While Davidson lost 10 starters across the board, the 'Cats are seeing depth and an extremely cohesive unit on both sides of the ball with 12 starters returning. Offensively, Luke Durkin will get the start for the 'Cats at QB with multiple offensive starters returning. Defensively, Davidson returns Jonathan Hammond, Jaden Pask and Darryn Kindles.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
The Gamecocks are in their first year under the direction of head coach Rich Rodriguez, who notched his first career win at JSU over Stephen F. Austin, 42-17, last weekend.
Against the Lumberjacks, JSU overcame a 17-7 second-quarter deficit scoring 35 unanswered points. The Gamecocks record 360 yards of total offense, 231 yards in the second half alone before the game was called due to lightning.
QB Zion Webb and S Deco Wilson were named the ASUN's players of the week following Webb's 160-yard passing performance on top of rushing for three scores and 59 yards, and Wilson's eight tackles and an interception.
JSU has an all-time home opener record of 54-18-3 at Burgess-Snow Field including 16 straight wins.
