'Cats Close Out Training Camp

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson football team closed out training camp Friday in advance of their first game of the season next week at Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Alabama.
"Each camp you hope to begin to establish your identity and this seems to be one of the tightest groups I have ever worked with," Head Coach Scott Abell said. "We have depth across the roster and we can run at every position. We will need to continue to gain valuable experience in keys positions as we play our non-conference schedule to become the team we are capable of becoming by the time we get to conference play."
Offensively, Abell has seen a ton of growth in the young QB room along with great leadership from the upperclassmen and captains. He has noticed the difference following off-season workouts, giving credit to Coach Evan Simon and the strength staff for getting the team in shape. All of this has helped move the team along faster in preparation for the season.
"This is a compliment to our upperclassman, the staff and the quality of talent throughout the offensive unit," Abell said.
Defensively, Associate Head Coach Jon Berlin and Assistant Head Coach Steven Jackson have seen improvement and the potential of the defensive unit this season.
"We run very well as a defense and our players are doing a great job of learning our defensive schemes and concepts," Berlin said. "This group is a very cohesive unit and I think that will serve us well as we move forward."
On the special teams side, Jackson believes the ST unit will contribute in major ways this season.
"I am extremely excited about the depth we have across the entire roster which has led to tremendous amount of talent in each phase of special teams," Jackson said. "We have had a high level of competition that has allowed several players both veteran and freshman to perform highly. I look forward to our special teams unit contributing to our program competing at a high level."
LOOKING AHEAD
The back-to-back PFL Champions will hit the road for their first contest of the 2022 season next Saturday, Sept. 3 to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a rematch of the 2020-21 FCS Playoff Game. Kickoff is at 1 pm EST from Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
