'Cats Open Season with 1-1 Draw at Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Riley Patton's goal in the 60th minute helped the Davidson Wildcats play USC Upstate to a season-opening 1-1 draw in women's soccer Thursday night.
Nine minutes after the Spartans took the lead on an Ellie Arnold free kick, Patton scored on a left-footed shot to the lower left of the net to even the score. It's the second straight year Patton has scored in the season opener, following last season's go-ahead goal against Gardner-Webb.
In her first game since missing 2021 with an injury, Hailey Braemer assisted on Patton's goal and led the Wildcats with four shots-on-goal. She forced multiple saves, angled one first-half shot just wide right and hit the crossbar three minutes into the second.
The Wildcat defense made sure the Spartans didn't retake the lead, rejecting multiple shots in the closing moments. Keeper Mary Grace Bunch had multiple saves down the stretch, and Sophia Caruso had a crucial clear.

Davidson returns to the road to face Presbyterian at 2 p.m. Sunday in Clinton, S.C. The Wildcats won last year's meeting 2-1, and Presbyterian opens the season Friday at Furman.
