The 2021-22 Davidson Athletics Annual Report
7/7/2022
Dear Wildcat,
One of the challenges for Davidson Athletics revolves around sustained excellence. No one wants to be good one year but not the next. We try to embrace a level of championship competitiveness across all our programs, putting ourselves both individually and collectively in the hunt every year. The 2020-21 year was a good year, even amidst persistent challenges with COVID. We won in the classroom. We won on the courts, on the fields, on the track, on the mat and in the pool. And we won in the community through leadership and service. Here is the exciting part – the 2021-22 season was even better!
I could not be prouder of the Davidson Athletics and Davidson College community. Our scholar-athletes, coaches, and administration embraced our core values of C.A.T.S. – Consistency, Accountability, Teamwork and Success. We leaned even further into our strategic foundation of doing athletics right: High-level athletics, high-level academics, no compromise. A renewed commitment to cultivating a diverse, inclusive, and accountable environment. Continued enhancement of our sports performance and mental wellness platforms. The launch of the Curry Family Women’s Athletics Scholarship Initiative as part of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX. Moving forward with the Athletics Done Right – The Next Step facility project which will transform this campus and community. And so much more. We took another step in the bold but attainable directive to become one of the best athletic programs in the country.
This past year saw an incredible 332 Davidson scholar-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving GPAs of 3.0 or higher – most in the A-10! Countless Conference Player/Rookie of the Week, Conference Player of the Year, All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-Academic selections. Numerous team, program, individual and statistical records. Individual and team NCAA qualifiers as well as All-Americans. Another (!!!) nationally recognized and prestigious Watson Fellowship. Two Conference championships. Four (4!) Coaches of the Year. Simply put – this has been one of the best years in Davidson Athletics history.
The 2021-22 Annual Report is a testament to some incredible moments, created by our amazing scholar-athletes and cultivated by our dedicated coaches, faculty, and staff. It is a testament to the passion, generosity and support exhibited by the faithful Davidson community. And it is a testament to the sustained excellence of Davidson Athletics and this special community. It was another year for the history books, and we remain excited for not just where we are but more so where we are going. As always, it is a great day to be a Wildcat.
Sincerely,
Chris Clunie '06, Director of Athletics

TITLE IX

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
As June 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the adoption of Title IX, Davidson Athletics officially began its year-long celebration of the federal civil rights law’s passing on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022.
Although Title IX legislation ensures all students, both male and female, have access and equality in education, one of its greatest impacts has been across the landscape of women’s intercollegiate athletics. With 2022 also representing the 50th anniversary of co-education at Davidson College, the athletic department has dedicated this year to honoring and celebrating the past, present and future of women’s athletics on campus.
“We are very excited to celebrate the anniversary of Title IX and co-education,” said Director of Athletics Chris Clunie ’06. “Davidson has a rich history of both individual and collective success within women’s athletics, which has transformed this campus and this community. This year-long celebration will focus on the past, present and future of excellence within Davidson women’s athletics but also highlight a continued commitment to opportunities and access for our female scholar-athletes.”
This year’s celebrations featured the 2022 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, signature Title IX themed events for each of Davidson’s nine women’s athletic programs, alumni gatherings, youth clinics and more. The department’s kickoff event was held on Saturday, Jan. 15 as the women’s basketball team invited all alumni back for a full day of celebration on campus.

DAVIDSON ATHLETIC FUND

The 2021-22 academic year also saw Davidson College’s launch of its Athletics Done Right - The Next Step initiative, which announced plans for new facilities to further enhance experiences for scholar-athletes, members of campus and Wildcat fans. While still in the design phase, the goal is to complete all elements of the project within a total cost of $51 million. To date, nearly $40 million has been raised from alumni and friends.
Many individuals have chosen to make transformational gifts to this project through their estate plans. For more information on this project and methods of investing, visit davidsonwildcats.com/thenextstep.

Davidson College is committed to empowering women scholar-athletes and their coaches. Last summer, we also announced the Curry Family Women’s Athletics Initiative, which aims to boost endowed scholarship support for our 10 women’s sports. We are thrilled to report that nearly $3 million has been raised benefitting our women’s programs.

2022 HALL OF FAME

Davidson College inducted Eric Ferguson '00 (Football), Claude Finney '61 (Men's Soccer), Kayli Maxwell '08 (Field Hockey), Caroline Price (Former Women's Tennis Head Coach) and the 1984 DIII National Champion Women's Tennis Team into the 29th class of the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame in late February.
"The achievements of this year's class of inductees are a tremendous addition to the history of Davidson Athletics," said Director of Athletics Chris Clunie. "This team and these individuals have earned the honor and privilege of joining the Hall of Fame.
In addition to Price becoming the first female head coach inducted, her 1984 squad was the first-ever team enshrined.
Eric Ferguson '00 - Football
Ferguson ranks fourth on the Davidson career-rushing list with 2,791 yards and is one of four Wildcats to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. He led Davidson in rushing all four years he played from 1996-99, and his 975 yards as a senior were the sixth-highest total in school history at the time of his graduation. His 33 career touchdowns (29 rush, 4 rec.) are tied for second on the Davidson chart, and his 3,173 all-purpose yards rank eighth. The Wildcats did not have a conference affiliation during his four-year tenure, but Davidson compiled a record of 25-17.
Claude Finney '61 - Soccer
Finney was Davidson soccer's first All-American. He was the team's starting goalkeeper beginning in his freshman season, the sport's second year of existence at Davidson. Finney was a member of the All-South squad for four straight years and earned all-conference honors as a sophomore. That season, he had one of his strongest years in the goal, allowing only 1.30 goals per game over a 10-game schedule.
Kayli Maxwell '08 - Field Hockey
Maxwell impacted Davidson field hockey immediately upon arrival, leading the Wildcats in scoring as a freshman (9 goals) and earning NorPac East Rookie of the Year honors. By the time her career concluded, she was a four-time All-NorPac selection and Davidson's all-time leader in goals (40), assists (23) and total points (103). She led the league with 35 points (14 goals, 7 assists) in 2007, earning NorPac East Player of the Year honors.
Caroline Price - Former Women's Tennis Coach
Price accumulated a 422-314 (.573) career record in 32 years of leading the Davidson women's tennis program. She guided the Wildcats to a pair of trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship match, while taking home the 1984 national championship as the only national championship title ever earned by a Davidson athletic team. The following year, Price guided the 'Cats back to the championship match on their way to a school-record 21 wins in 1985. Fast forward a few years and Price went on to earn a Big South Championship title in 1991 and then finished runner-up in 1992. During it all, she registered 22 winning seasons, including a nine-year run, the 'Cats reached the Southern Conference Tournament final four times and went a combined 150-71.
1984 Women's Tennis Team
The Davidson women's tennis team captured the only National Title in school history in 1984, defeating UC San Diego, 15-14, in Kalamazoo, Mich. That year, the Wildcats went 17-6 during the regular season, and went on three different four-match win streaks throughout the campaign, on their way to the national championship.
