NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —Davidson catcher Michael Carico is Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Also honored on March 1, Carico joins teammate Ryan Wilson as a two-time Player of the Week this year, as Wilson secured the last two. Additionally, it's the fifth time in as many weeks at least one Wildcat has earned A-10 honors, also including pitchers Nolan DeVos (twice) and Blake Hely.
In the weekend series against UNC Greensboro, Carico hit .714 (10-for-14) with four RBIs and a double, triple and home run. He finished the weekend with a 1.893 OPS (.750 on-base, 1.143 slugging) and scored five runs.
"Mike has continued his great play this week," said coach Rucker Taylor, whose Wildcats are now 19-4. "He's constantly working to get better, and we're happy for his success."
Through 23 games, Carico leads the A-10 with a .476 average (2nd nationally), 11 doubles, 73 total bases, 13 hit-by-pitches (4th nationally), 29 runs scored and with an .890 slugging percentage (6th nationally). He's also the team leader with a 1.480 OPS, 39 hits and seven home runs and ranks second on the team with 25 RBIs and a .590 on-base percentage.
In Friday's series opener at home, Carico was 4-for-4 and drove in runs on two RBI-singles.
Saturday at UNCG, he was 3-for-6 with a double and three runs. And Sunday in High Point, he came within a double of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run to go with two runs and two RBIs.
