NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Having helped the Davidson Wildcats sweep No. 22 Bryant over the weekend, Michael Carico and Blake Hely have earned weekly recognition from the Atlantic 10, the conference office announced Tuesday morning.
Carico, a sophomore catcher, is A-10 Player of the Week, while Hely, a senior right-hander, is A-10 Pitcher of the Week.
Honored for the first time, Carico had a breakout weekend, posting a 1.849 OPS and hitting .714. He was 10-for-14 at the plate, with five doubles and seven RBIs.
"Mike was outstanding on both sides all week and has been really this whole season," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "He's caught well and been a driving force offensively. He's a great player that has had a wonderful start to the season."
Hely was part of a dominant pitching weekend for the Wildcats, who outscored Bryant 23-2. In Saturday's 11-0 win, he threw eight innings and struck out 14, while allowing just two hits, a leadoff double and a second-inning bloop single. He struck out the side in the third and retired 12 straight batters and 19 of the final 20 he faced.
That came a day after Nolan DeVos went eight innings, struck out 13 and held Bryant to three hits in a 3-0 series-opening win.
"Blake followed Nolan DeVos' dominant start and arguably topped his performance," said Taylor. "Blake was excellent, and it's great for our program that he's back and possibly even better than last season."
Hely struck out two batters in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth before handing the reins to reliever Brian Craven to close out the win. Through 11 innings this season, Hely has a 3.27 ERA and 18 strikeouts and has held opposing hitters to a .135 average.
The A-10 weekly honor is the second for the Coral Springs, Fla., native with the other coming on March 2, 2020.
Through seven games, Carico leads the nation with seven doubles and the A-10 in on-base percentage (.656) and hit-by-pitches (6). He has doubled in six straight games and is leading the Wildcats with a .542 average, a 1.489 OPS, 13 hits, 10 RBIs, 20 total bases and an .833 slugging percentage.
A Kernersville native, Carico cleared the bases with a second-inning double in last Tuesday's win over Radford and was 4-for-5 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. He was also hit by four pitches during the week — taking his week's on-base percentage to .778 — scored four runs and, as catcher, was part of 40 outs (35 putouts, 5 assists) without an error.
