Wildcats Kicking Off Spring Schedule

This time a year ago, the Davidson women's soccer team was about to embark on a slate of 14 games in a regular season delayed from the fall of 2020.
Although it worked out really well — the Wildcats reached the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament final for the first time — it was anything but a typical spring. In fact, most current Wildcats have not experienced anything like a typical spring while in college, as it's been three years since the Wildcats spent the full second semester of a school year preparing for the regular fall season.
But 2022's arrival has restored some normalcy for the Wildcats, with practice and a handful of spring games sprinkled in, and coach Adam Denton likes what he's seen from his team so far.
"Really excited with how we've started and excited for the challenges we'll face this spring as we build toward next fall," he said. "They've had great attitudes at practice. We're excited about the spring opportunities we have as a group. It's a good game schedule and an opportunity for players to grow in an environment of preparation for the competitive fall season."
The Wildcats returned to work immediately after arriving back on campus, and they've been putting in the offseason training, while working toward the spring game schedule that begins Feb. 25 at home against Queens.
"This is a huge opportunity for us to grow individually and collectively," said Hannah Casey. "We are no longer in our backyards passing against a wall (like in 2020), and I am excited to see what we can accomplish all together and with lots of time to train and develop."
In all, the Wildcats will play five spring contests, including another home date on April 9 against Belmont-Abbey, and also host an alumnae game on April 2. Spring games are the regular 90 minutes and open to fans, and they'll offer opportunities for the Wildcats to simulate game play against outside competition.
"I'm hoping to learn how our team will respond to adversity and work together on the field, especially as we try to fill in open spots left by our graduating seniors," said Cecie Bassett. "I'm also excited for us to have the opportunity to implement everything that we practice and discuss within a game setting."
The Wildcats describe the early training sessions as competitive, intense and fun, and they expect each drill to pay off in games, both this spring and next fall.
"I think that this group is special because of our collective work-rate and commitment to the program both on and off the field," said Riley Patton. "Even though it has only been a week, I can already tell how passionate this group is about getting better and pushing the needle forward."
