'Cats Start Strong at Southeast Open

ROANOKE, Va. – The Davidson wrestling team began its 2022-23 season at the Southeast Open Saturday, signaling the start of the Nate Carr Jr. coaching era.
With 346 wrestlers across 10 mats, Davidson had 17 Wildcats compete and nine opening-round victories, eight of which came from underclassmen.
Four 'Cats reached the semifinals of their respective draws, as Jackson Sichelstiel made it to the Freshman/Sophomore 133-pound semis after picking up 6-2, 8-5 and 5-2 decisions against The Citadel, Franklin & Marshall and Virginia.
Freshmen Marc Koch and Tanner Peake both competed in the Freshmen/Sophomore 157 weight class, both reaching the semifinals on each side of the bracket. Koch pinned his opponent from Tiffin in 6:11 before earning an 11-5 result against Norfolk Academy's Nolan O'Boyle, while Peake won 7-5 and 3-1 in a sudden victory against Nick Sanko from UVA.
Oliver Tipton was Davidson's other semifinalist, with the New Jersey native earning victories against Newberry and Tiffin before falling to West Virginia in the 184 Freshman/Sophomore draw.
Devon Diaco and Luke Passarelli earned one win each in the 125 weight class, while Noah Frack picked up a 4-0 win against App in the 149-pound class and senior Gavin Henry rounded out the day with a 4-2 decision against Newberry in the 197 Open.

Davidson returns to the mats on Friday, Nov. 11 for its home opener against Michigan State at 6 p.m.
