DAVIDSON, N.C. – Behind a pair of first-half goals and two unbelievable late saves from Giacomo Piccardo, Davidson knocked off Rhode Island, 2-1, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats, who dropped their last two, bounce back improving to 5-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while the Rams fall to 5-3-1 and 1-1-0.
The two teams wasted little time getting on the board as goals were traded in the opening minutes just 44 seconds apart.
At the 4:30 mark, Jack Wilson put the 'Cats in front following a Henry Howell corner kick that Mateo Alzate played to the defender for his second career strike.
Not long after, Ivan Montoro flicked in a Hugo Guerra cross to answer for Rhode Island and even the score.
Just prior to intermission, Connor Smith gave the lead back to the Wildcats when he found the back of the net in the 39th minute.
The eventual game-winner came from in front when Justin Stone and Howell hooked up with the midfielder on a counter attack.
In addition to its first-ever win over the Rams, Davidson finished with a 14-12 edge in shots, while both keepers recorded four saves.
